Our Club's history

The formation of Clevedon Bowling Club was first discussed in 1907. Some three years later a meeting was held in the Public Hall on 18th April 1910 at 9pm under the Chairmanship of Mr T W Munden with J P Parker as temporary secretary. The site for the Green was in Linden Road adjoining the tennis courts and would be offered on lease for the princely sum of five pounds per annum.
On 23rd May 1910 a full meeting was held for the adoption of the rules and election of officers. At this meeting Sir Edmund H Elton was elected President, JB Parker, Secretary and Treasurer, O Hunt, Captain and F Seckington Vice Captain. Subscriptions were to be two shillings and sixpence (12p) per annum. The Chairman of Clevedon Urban District Council, Colonel W Long CMG officially opened the green on Monday evening the 30th May at 6pm.
The first match in the history of the club was played against Greville Smyth, Bristol on Wednesday 27th July 1910.
On the Bank Holiday of 1st August 1910 a match was staged with over 40s playing the under 40s. The youngsters won by five shots.
A special General Meeting was hold on 10th November 1910 when it was agreed that the club would move from Linden Road to the Paddocks, Chapel Hill. This was leased to the club by Major G W Willcock for a term of 12 years at a cost of £15 per annum.
After considerable work the new green and club house was opened on Wednesday 7th June 1911 by J W Arrowsmith, president of the West of England Bowls League and our President Sir Edmund H Elton.
There is an indoor two rink green under the clubhouse allowing members to play in the winter months.
The club progressed and was affiliated to the English Bowling Association in 1912 and to the Somerset Bowling Association on its formation in 1915.
Until 2000 Clevedon Bowling Club only admitted male members but at the AGM in this year the club became mixed and ladies were admitted for the first time.
As a Club we have won many honours including winning the Turnbull Cub, Somerset County Trophy on thirteen occasions. We are also honoured to have David Bryant, CBE, as one of our members. He is the holder of 20 Word and Commonwealth titles and represented England at outdoor and indoor bowls throughout the world over 35 years.
